  • When we’re trying to save money, a gym membership is usually one of the first things to go.
  • But there are ways that you can make the most of your membership to ensure that it is not a wasted expense.
  • And if signing up to a gym is not the right move for you at the moment, there are more affordable ways to remain in shape, like swimming or joining fitness classes in your area.

You don’t have to break the bank in order to keep in shape; getting and staying fit remains possible no matter your budget. Dean Zweck, product development manager at Total Fitness in the UK, shares a few helpful tips on how to get in shape without spending too much money.

Mix up your workouts

It’s a great idea to pair home workouts with a gym routine. You can fit in a session whenever works best for your schedule.

“Try to alternate between the gym and working out at home so you can benefit from the variety of machines and heavier weights at the gym, but also the convenience of home workouts,” advises Dean.

Swim to get fit

Unlike other forms of exercise that require expensive equipment, swimming only requires swimwear and a pair of goggles.

Research local gyms

Gyms that offer a variety of ways for members to exercise, from swimming pools to group classes, are worth the cost most times.

Join a class

Signing up to a class can be another money-saving way to get fit and have some fun. Drop classes have a “drop-in” price where you only pay per class instead of committing to a monthly fee. This will also help ensure that you’re not spending a ton of money a month for classes you’re not attending. From an intense boot camp to a calming yoga session, there is always an option to suit your mood or capacity. “As well as helping you to find new workouts that you can build into your everyday fitness routine,” adds Dean. “They can give you exercises to try outside of the class and build up your confidence too.”

Try online workouts

YouTube is your friend when it comes to free classes. All you need is an internet connection, and you have access to dance workouts, Pilates, yoga and more.
